This dissertation offers an “emic perspective”, following the line of research developed by Indigenous anthropologists such as João Paulo L., Justino Sarmento and João Rivelino, among others. It is grounded in a methodological proposal named in the Achuar language Wayúsjai aámu and, in Spanish, “Ethnography with the Wayús”. The research was carried out in dialogue and companionship with the Wayús plant, to speak about it and about the Achuar people of whom it is part, in the Pastaza River basin of the northern Peruvian Amazon. The study demonstrates how the practice of consuming Wayús constitutes a way of life that integrates ontology, pedagogy, and sociality. The plant is understood as a subject-agent endowed with wakán, capable of transmitting visions, counsel, and vital force. Its morning intake, accompanied by vomiting, purifies the body and opens the path toward dreams (kara) and the encounter with Arútam, a source of protection and resistance. This practice also functions as a pedagogical space where techniques of hunting, fishing, and forest life are taught, and where children are initiated into the discipline of dreams. Moreover, Wayús structures community life: it resolves conflicts, guides marriages, and sustains identity even in urban contexts. The dissertation thus reveals the centrality of Wayús in the Achuar way of living, weaving together body, memory, and territory.
