Resumo
The growing demand for road infrastructure materials and the need for environmentally
appropriate disposal of construction and demolition waste have encouraged research into
the reuse of these materials in geotechnical applications. In this context, this study aimed
to evaluate the influence of construction and demolition waste (CDW) incorporation on
the geotechnical properties of a clayey soil collected in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil,
assessing its potential as a physical stabilization material for road pavement applications.
Natural soil and mixtures containing 20% and 35% CDW as partial soil replacement,
based on dry mass, were investigated. Geotechnical characterization included grain size
distribution, Atterberg limits, specific gravity of solids, soil classification, compaction,
California Bearing Ratio (CBR), and direct shear tests. Statistical analyses were also
performed to support the interpretation of the results. The findings showed that CDW
incorporation promoted favorable changes in grain size distribution, reduced plasticity,
increased maximum dry density, and decreased optimum moisture content. A substantial
increase in bearing capacity was observed, with higher CBR values than those of the
natural soil. Under non-flooded direct shear conditions, the natural soil exhibited the
highest mean shear strengths at all applied normal stress levels. Among the investigated
mixtures, the composition containing 20% CDW showed the most favorable behavior at
three of the four normal stress levels and the highest internal friction angle, indicating a
greater contribution from the frictional component. Inferential analyses applied to the
non-flooded test results confirmed statistically significant differences among the
investigated materials. The findings indicate that CDW has technical potential as a
physical stabilization material for clayey soils in the Amazon region, contributing both to
modifications in geotechnical behavior and to the sustainable reuse of construction and
demolition waste.
