Disfunção temporomandibular: diagnóstico e tratamento clínico

Resumo

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) have been increasing in daily clinical practice. Many lines of initial treatment indicate clinical treatment as the first choice and surgical treatment only as a last possibility. In this discussion, there is still the option of reversible treatments for irreversible ones. Many health professionals still have doubts regarding the diagnosis and treatment of TMDs, which generates wrong treatments and, consequently, frustrations for patients. OBJECTIVES: General: To develop an ebook on the diagnosis and clinical treatment of the main temporomandibular disorders. Specific: 1- Carry out an integrative review on the anatomy, dysfunctions, anamnesis, clinical examination, imaging tests, disorders, main treatments and recommendations for surgical treatments of the TMJ; 2- Register as an unpublished work with the copyright office of the National Library Foundation, in order to obtain an intellectual property registration. METHOD: An integrative review of the literature on the diagnosis and clinical treatment of temporomandibular disorders was carried out to prepare an e-book. RESULTS: 89 articles and 7 books were found based on the searches with the descriptors using the Boolean AND operator, selecting 39 works that met the determined inclusion and exclusion criteria. They contained prospective clinical trial studies, systematic reviews, literature reviews, retrospective and longitudinal studies. In this way, an e-book was created to study Temporomandibular Disorders, consisting of five chapters and 116 pages, which addresses the following topics: Chapter 1 – Anatomophysiology of the TMJ; Chapter 2 – Temporomandibular Disorders; Chapter 3 – Anamnesis and clinical examination of TMDs; Chapter 4 – Evaluation of TMJ imaging exams and Chapter 5 – Treatment of TMDs. CONCLUSIONS: The development of the e-book aimed at the diagnosis and clinical treatment of temporomandibular disorders is of great value to academics, general practitioners, specialists in the areas of dentistry, medicine, physiotherapy and speech therapy. Helps in the identification of pathologies and correct referral for treatment.
