Resumo

This research explores the trajectories of activists and social movements in Manaus between 1967 and 1989, focusing on the role of the print media in representing criminality and criminalizing social movements and urban practices. The study primarily analyzes the newspapers Acrítica and Jornal do Comércio to understand how the media influenced public perceptions and policies concerning security and social rights. The period covered includes the military dictatorship and the transition to democracy, reflecting the tensions between commercial interests and workers' resistance. The role of the Unified Black Movement (MNU) and the Black Soul Movement (MOAN) is highlighted, emphasizing the struggle for the valorization of Afro-Brazilian culture and resistance against institutionalized racism. The research also examines women's participation in social movements, highlighting their leadership in strikes and mobilizations, and their influence on public policies and media representation. The final chapter analyzes disputes over the city and memory, emphasizing the construction and contestation of discourses on crime and security, and the impact of these discourses on public policies. The research reflects on the ongoing struggle for rights and equality, underscoring how cultural practices and social mobilization shape the identity and political dynamics of Manaus.
