Resumo
Among many geopolitical themes such as borders, oil, religion, war, nationalism, and others, diplomacy has been a topic almost absent in the history of geography. Unlike state institutions focused on internal space, the spatial forms of diplomacy—that is, its institutions, material base, and functions—are inherent constructions in the process of constitution and consolidation of modern States. Among the various hotspot regions in global geopolitics, the Amazon region is one of the most mentioned in the international press, international forums, and diplomatic agreements between European states and Brazil. This research aims to answer the following question: How is the Brazilian Amazon inserted into diplomacy? Based on this question, the following path was outlined to find potential answers: initially, we sought to understand the political dimension of diplomacy by examining it conceptually; next, we sought to identify the spatial dimension of diplomacy and its encounter with Political Geography, conducting a bibliographic review to achieve this objective; subsequently, a historical overview of the subdiscipline (political geography) was carried out in order to understand the distancing, approximation, and development of classical and contemporary studies present in geography; finally, to elucidate the discussion, political space was established as a conceptual-methodological resource in this research, aiming to find a spatial dimension beyond geographic objects. A survey of statistical data was conducted through the Global Diplomacy Index, a platform that tracks the quantitative evolution of diplomatic representations since 2016 for 50 countries, and through the websites of resident embassies in Brasília.
