Resumo
The following master’s thesis analyzed how archaeological spaces in Manaus have become invisibilized over time. It investigated the social, historical, and institutional processes that contributed to the neglect, deterioration, and public distancing from these sites.
The research objective was to comprehend how management practices, public policies, social representations, and everyday uses influence the preservation and public perception of these spaces, all through an anthropological lens. The investigation used a qualitative approach of ethnographic inspiration, based on theoretical review, historical data gathering, documentary analysis, and fieldwork research. This included systematic observation and informal interviews with regular visitors, residents, and institutional agents. The results indicated that the absence of signage, the fragility of protection policies, the insufficiency of oversight (fiscalization), and the lack of continuous patrimonial education actions contribute to the erasure of these places. This is further associated with the predominance of Eurocentric narratives that disregard Indigenous participation in the formation of the city. In conclusion, the strengthening of collective memory and the appreciation of these spaces depend on integrated policies, community participation, and the effective recognition of the historical and cultural importance of these sites for the comprehension of Manaus’ urban and social trajectory.
