Abstract

Located in the country's largest state by territorial extension and surrounded by the majority of the Amazon rainforest, the city of Manaus has developed paradoxically in relation to its geographical surroundings: on one side, the harmony of the forest; on the other, the disorder and stratification of the urban center. Sharing the same climatic conditions as the Amazon region—markedly hot and humid—the issues facing Brazil's sixthlargest city are also characteristic of those in developing nations. These problems are further aggravated by the destructive forces ravaging the tropical rainforest, which so heavily influences the capital's climate. The consequences of the urban degradation and disorder recorded in recent years provide a basis for urban projects in Manaus through the lens of Design. Based on this context, the research is structured into theoretical and expository chapters, presenting a Design methodology aimed at achieving the stipulated objectives and producing results that can direct necessary interventions in Manaus's urban fabric. This intervention takes the form of a floating structure dedicated to leisure, given that the city possesses a rich array of natural and cultural resources and is in urgent need of planning to address contemporary climatic and population demands.
