The open lecture addressed the foundations and applications of digital libraries and digital curation within the field of Library and Information Science, highlighting their historical, technical, and professional developments. It began by contextualizing access to information in the digital age, emphasizing the librarian’s role as curator and mediator of information. The concepts of digital libraries and digital curation were presented, distinguishing them from other forms of information storage and access. The main software platforms used in digital library management such as DSpace, Greenstone, EPrints, and Fedora were discussed, along with digital preservation strategies, including migration, emulation, encapsulation, redundancy, and the use of standards such as PREMIS. The content also covered recommended formats for text, images, videos, and audio, and stressed the importance of descriptive and administrative metadata. The stages of digital curation were addressed, from planning to cultural dissemination of collections, as well as the relationship between curation and Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS). Finally, the lecture discussed the profile of the digital librarian and their ethical, technical, and strategic role in preserving and valuing informational memory. It reinforced Library Science’s commitment to the preservation of knowledge in times of technological transformation.
