Resumo

Agriculture is one of the most important events in humanity. Since the Neolithic period it has been undergoing profound changes and modifying the environment in which it is practiced. Before seen only as a means of food production was practiced by farmers, thereby reducing the practice of extraction, today participates in discussions involving food security policy internationally. Agriculture then goes on to have great importance in the economic sector of the country. Concerns about the problems caused by the use of new production practices, often harmful to the environment, were dispensed for some time, but the environment has responded to these abuses. Seeking a way of production which is less aggressive arises the concept of sustainable development. Amazon in agriculture practiced in the past by the indigenous still remains, however, the use of new production techniques with the use of chemical inputs is encouraged so that there is increased production of food. Currently the production of family farming is primarily responsible for the food security of the population and despite the low incentive that gets to produce, look for ways to keep yourself in a sustainable manner. The objective of this study is to analyze the family farming from the perspective of sustainability: environmental, social and economic in the San Francisco Community in Careiro Lowland the city - Amazonas, Brazil. For this work, in addition to literature review, they collected field data using the systems approach method, fundamental for understanding and analyzing the Agricultural Production Unit functioning with the use of MESMIS Tool (Framework for Assessment Systems Natural Resource Management Incorporating Sustainability Indicators). The analysis occurred after characterization socioeconomic of 32 family agricultural production units; identifying key environmental factors (critical points and favorable), dimensions of the indicators of agricultural sustainability in this locality; it is expected this work to validate this indicator of sustainability for the agro floodplain.
