Percepção de moradores da orla do bairro da União de Parintins-AM sobre os ciclos sazonais do rio Amazonas

Resumo

The Orla of União neighborhood, a significant part of Parintins-AM, is a prime location for studying the seasonal rhythm of water in the Amazon. This rhythm, evident in the floods and ebbs of rivers, substantially changes people's lives and alters the local ecosystem. The study, conducted with residents of this neighborhood, focused on understanding their experiences and perceptions about these seasonal cycles of the river. The waterfront of União, a postcard and gateway for tourists during the Boi Bumbá festivals, undergoes a dramatic transformation during the flood season. The festive floats gather there, and the place buzzes with the departure of small and medium-sized boats. The social dynamics, movement, and even the trash change with the transition from' more water' to' more land' reflects the impact of human interaction on the environment. The study was designed to understand residents' perceptions about the change in the geophysical scenario and socio-environmental practices due to the river's seasonality. It was conducted in two stages. The first stage involved a socio-environmental survey of the physical space using the walkthrough technique. In the second stage, 26 residents (14 men and 12 women) aged 19 to 67 were interviewed. The study's results revealed that seasonal changes are observed and experienced by the community. Despite its disadvantages, such as pollution and noise, the flood period is a time of economic gains and social joy. On the other hand, the low-water period is a time of rest and reflection, marred by the fear of animal invasions and the sight of floating trash. The study also highlighted the residents' awareness of the environmental issues and the need for behavioral changes and efficient political management to address them.
