Resumo

Depression is a mental disorder that affects and generates a series of impairments for the patient and their support network. Given this scenario, this dissertation proposes an alternative treatment for this illness through the possible relationship between lettering and therapeutic writing. To this end, a bibliographic research was carried out to collect concrete data on the topics in question (lettering, therapeutic writing, depression, and editorial design), in order to defend the proposed theme. The objective is to develop a lettering book that, together with the techniques of therapeutic writing, can help alleviate depressive symptoms, thus contributing to the emotional well-being of the patient, who will find a light, fun, relaxed, and artistic way to better cope with their feelings. As a scientific methodology, this research is classified into several categories: according to its nature (applied), according to technical procedures (bibliographic), according to objectives (exploratory), and according to the approach to the problem (qualitative), which will be better explained in the methodology section. Furthermore, the Design Thinking methodology was used, applying its stages to the conception of the lettering book, thus leading to the production of the work, which, associated with expressive writing, can contribute to the relief, or better coping with, depression. The dissertation presents two surveys conducted through Google Forms, one with 43 lettering artists, aiming to understand the expression of feelings and emotions through this art and also to prove its therapeutic function. The other survey was conducted with 7 psychologists who use therapeutic writing in their sessions, to assess whether lettering could be associated with this technique in order to alleviate depressive symptoms. Most of the responses provided validate the central idea defended throughout the dissertation.
