Resumo
This study aims to discuss the phenomenon of oriental and geek pop culture in the city of
Manaus, which occupies museum spaces through conventions open to the general public.
The research aims to discuss this segment based on the understanding of culture and
transculturality, by seeking to understand the tribes that make up the geek pop culture
segment. In order to contextualize the diversity and expansion of this niche, we used as a
basis research already carried out to date by several authors who discussed the scenario in
Brazil and worldwide, taking into account field research in different locations. In addition,
we needed to briefly approach the glocal theme, based on Edgar Morin, to explain the
exchanges and influences between cultures, as is the case of Japanese-Brazilian Culture and
Hallyu in Brazil. To carry out this research, the methods used were qualitative and included
a bibliographic, documentary and field approach. When conducting the state of the art, it
was observed that studies that address the theme “pop culture in museums” are scarce,
making the present study necessary in order to fill this gap, by seeking to understand how
the alliance between geek events and museums works and their motivations; in addition, the
present study seeks to discuss geek culture as a legitimate culture and no longer as a
subculture. To this end, during the field research, face-to-face questionnaires were applied
through Google Forms and the Instagram social media poll tool in order to reach the geek
audience that has a greater online participation concentration; semi-structured interviews to
collect information related to the theme, in addition to participant observation at the events.
Thus, the following cultural and museum centers were delimited as locations (objects): a)
Palacete Provincial, b) Centro Cultural dos Povos da Amazônia and c) Teatro Amazonas;
and subjects, the public attending the events, as well as the administrative team or board of
directors of the spaces that host such events, in addition to the cultural production companies,
namely: Casa Geek 42, Empire Dioramas and 1 Minuto Nerd. Regarding the analysis of the
data collected, content analysis was carried out based on the information presented by the
individuals interviewed together with the theory, which sought to answer the question of
what impacts geek events have on museum spaces in Manaus that host them, taking as its
objective the studies of Culture, Oriental Pop Culture and Geek and identifying who is the
public attending such events in the spaces studied. Finally, the study concludes and reflects
on the mutual exchange between geek events and museums, reinforcing the legitimacy of
this culture based on the interviews conducted with the managers of the museums that host
the events; as well as its beneficial impacts on these spaces and on Manaus society,
recognizing its importance, effectiveness and emphasizing the new role of the museum as a
living museum, in the face of contemporary Manaus society.
