Estudo sobre o uso das tranças africanas na Amazônia: os caminhos de uma estética racial

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the aesthetic experiences of Black people in the city of Manaus, exploring their social relationships and identity constructions. The aim was to understand the stories behind the use of braids and hairstyles, their significance and diversity in Brazil and worldwide, as well as their ethnic, social, and political value. Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews, conducted both in person and remotely, in addition to field notebooks, participant observation, and accounts of professional experiences and individual trajectories. The findings led to the conclusion that the use of African braids in the Amazon and the racial aesthetics associated with them have profound significance, both for the affirmation of Black identity and for the appreciation of cultural diversity. Braids are symbols of resistance, empowerment, and connection with ancestral roots. In an increasingly globalized world, where traditions are often forgotten or diluted, research on African braids in the Amazon highlights the importance of preserving and celebrating these cultural practices. African braids, while affirming Black identity, also become a starting point for a broader discussion about aesthetics, politics, and resistance. They remind us that beauty is diverse and that, by valuing our roots, we can build a more inclusive and just society. Thus, this research contributes to the recognition and appreciation of African cultures in Brazil, especially in a territory as rich and diverse as the Amazon.
