Resumo
This study investigates the reception of the Karibaya dance performance by
UATÊ Cia de Dança through the lens of Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory,
focusing on the triadic relationship of representamen, object, and interpretant. The
research intertwines semiotics, dance, and ethnographic experience to explore how
bodily and scenic signs are interpreted by spectators from a specific sociocultural
context. The analyses reveal that the audience’s reception predominantly remained
within firstness and secondness, without fully reaching thirdness, suggesting that the
recognition of the indigenous ritual represented in the performance was partial. The
findings indicate that prior exposure to art and indigenous cultural elements
significantly influences the depth of interpretation. Furthermore, this study highlights
the importance of cultural dissemination and audience engagement with artistic
expressions that intersect with indigenous traditions, fostering new possibilities for
meaning making.
