O ensino-aprendizagem de Língua Portuguesa para surdos: “Encontro das Águas” na formação docente

Abstract

This study in Applied Linguistics has a general objective to investigate aspects concerning the teaching-learning of Brazilian Portuguese for the deaf in the undergraduate majors of “Language–Brazilian Sign Language” and "Language–Brazilian Sign Language–Portuguese” in the federal universities of northern Brazil. Specifically, the research analyzes these majors’ teaching projects. Considering the legal documents guiding teaching-learning, we reflect on the training of teachers for the teaching-learning of Portuguese as a second language for the deaf. Our theoretical contribution is anchored in authors who have discussed bilingual education for the deaf (FERNANDES, 2003; FERNANDES; MOREIRA, 2009; LODI, 2013; NEVES; QUADROS, 2015; PEREIRA, 2011, 2014; RIBEIRO; SANTOS; FURTADO, 2015; SOARES, 2013). Our work is also grounded in documents dealing with Brazilian sign language and teaching-learning for the deaf (BRASIL, 2002; 2005, 2008, 2014b), in addition to discussions around the curriculum (APPLE, 2006a, 2006b; MACEDO, 2013; SACRISTÁN, 2000; SILVA, 1999). The research was qualitative (ANDRÉ, 2013; CELANI, 2005; OLIVEIRA, 2011) and used a case study (CHIZZOTTI, 2006; STAKE, 2003). The research contexts were five federal universities in northern Brazil, and participants were 15 academics from these majors. Profile and investigative questionnaires were used as instruments. For data analysis, content analysis was used (BARDIN, 2011; CHIZZOTTI, 2006). The documentary research indicated that, for the majors in question, only two universities’ teaching projects included enough courses for the teaching-learning of Portuguese for the deaf. Other universities offered few courses or electives. The research with participants showed that the academics in these majors perceived a lack of training regarding the teaching and learning of Portuguese for the deaf. Academics expressed a desire to deepen this area of study by adding courses that address this issue.
