The project, entitled “Understanding the Old to Work with the New: a strategy for including older people as subjects of study in geography classes – E.E.T.I Marcantonio Vilaça II – 2nd CMPM,” aims to investigate how older people are included in the educational context, particularly in geography teaching. The research started from the premise that aging is a topic that is rarely or never discussed in the school environment, which leads to the exclusion of this age group. This concern is beginning to arise because the elderly population in Brazil has been growing in recent years, as has been observed in other parts of the world. However, in Brazil, there is still a lack of public policies and infrastructure that cater to this group. Thus, it is possible to provide a geographical analysis and reflection on aging, no longer as data and numbers, but as information, research, observations, and critiques, in addition to investigating how this stage of life is viewed and felt by students. The rationale for the research lies in the need to break down stereotypes and prejudices associated with aging, suggesting that discussions on the subject be included in schools. The research uses the legal basis of Law 10.741/03 – Statute of the Elderly, which in its Article 22 already establishes the inclusion of the topic at all levels of formal education. The BNCC (National Common Core Curriculum) brings the Proposal for Cross-cutting Themes, which can be worked on in Citizenship and Civics - Human rights, traffic education, family and social life, children's and adolescents' rights, and respect for the elderly – in this way, we sought to identify whether teachers address the topic of “elderly people” in their classrooms, as well as students' perceptions of aging. The methodology combines bibliographic and field research, with interviews, questionnaires, and activities with teachers and students from E.E.T.I Marcantonio Vilaça II – 2nd CMPM. The research was conducted in the school environment, as it is a favorable space for the exchange of experiences between generations, giving students the opportunity to understand that aging is a natural and irreversible process, in addition to the implementation of activities focused on the theme. The research proved to be relevant as it was possible to observe the need to broaden understanding of the Geography of Aging and the inclusion of the Elderly Person as a theme in the school context, bringing a more inclusive view of aging in society.
