Gerações em movimento: raça, educação e cidadania nos processos de inserção de haitianos em Manaus

Resumo

In this thesis, we aim to investigate and analyze the processes of sociability and generational conflicts among Haitian immigrants in Manaus, during the period between 2021 and 2024. The study encompasses two main moments: initially, in the school environment, and later, in family gatherings at the interlocutors' homes and in public spaces such as downtown areas, squares, the university, and shopping centers. In this research, we seek to discuss the intersections between public schooling for the children of migrants, the formal and informal education of their parents, and how these aspects influence and impact different generations. Furthermore, we analyze the processes of naturalization and social participation of these actors in the urban context of Manaus. During conversations with the interlocutors, other relevant issues emerged that marked their migration and mobility processes, such as the importance of working within immigrant associations to ensure certain forms of access to citizenship, the confrontation with stigmas, and the daily experiences of racism and xenophobia faced by many of them. The Haitian diaspora also emerged as a central element in affirming a collective memory and a Haitian identity. Finally, we synthetically reaffirm the thesis that there is a necessary intersection—not merely perspectival or strictly theoretical—between migration, race, education, and citizenship. It is through the understanding of this necessary intersection that we can come to know and recognize Haitian migration not as a contingent consequence of climate events and external political problems, but as a phenomenon that reveals the most singular and indispensable relationships that shape and traverse us as mixed-race, racialized individuals born in the Global South.
