Imprensa, poder e política: a trajetória do jornal Correio do Norte (1906-1912)

Resumo

The main objective of this research was to investigate the trajectory of the newspaper Correio do Norte during the six years it was active in the journalistic arena of Manaus (1906-1912). The newspaper was presented with the subtitle “Organ of the Revisionist Party of the State of Amazonas” and for most of its existence, its main editors were Adriano Jorge and Heliodoro Balbi. During this period, Manaus, as a rubber exporting center, was a city that had become a metropolis, controlled by oligarchic factions linked to extractivism, where disputes for power took place within local political parties. Sometimes, it was through the newspapers to which they were linked that these groups articulated their strategies and political moves, above all, due to the press’s capacity to reach the public, capable of propagating ideas, opinions, and producing desires, expectations, and interests in its readers. Thus, the newspaper was used as an object of analysis, in which we sought to analyze its composition, its political and social projects, and its creators, as well as the universe of work and sociability of these characters. We sought to understand its importance and uniqueness, to perceive how the particular newspaper was constituted and to identify the social place of its “voice”, by inventorying its themes and relevant subjects, among which we can highlight the city, which emerged from Correio do Norte through publications of complaints and denunciations in its pages, leading us to perceive how the city was presented by the newspaper. Finally, with which groups it affiliated or articulated during its existence, especially with regard to local oligarchic disputes, in which we analyzed the role played by Correio do Norte in the power relations and policies that were established in the first years of the Republic in Amazonas.
