The Municipal Fair Cel. Jorge Teixeira, popularly known as the “Modern Manaus Fair”,
has existed since the mid-1970s, when it became a constituent part of the history of
Amazonas amid so many political and social decisions. Consolidated in the 1990s as the
most important fair in Manaus, the Manaus Modern Fair has an important supply role in
the city and has been resignifying with the modernization of this market. The unbridled
expansion of wholesale supermarkets is a phenomenon that proves the survival of fairs.
For Forman (1979), the fair model is economically and socially viable, but tends to be
compelled by the contemporary world. Structural, health and safety problems, which are
related to the government, threaten the continuity of fairs. Sociocultural complexity in the
context of the Modern Manaus Fair involves workers who maintain and collaborate for
the Amazonian culture, its particularities, its memory and for the networks of
interdependence, but without being aware of its importance. Why does this supply fair
model still stand? What is the contribution of the Modern Manaus Fair to the sociocultural
and economic development of the Amazon? How are power relations between
workers? What are the workers' perspectives on the future at the Manaus Modern Fair?
What local traditions and customs are identified? How do workers reframe them? This
dissertation research proposes to identify the socio-cultural and economic processes at the
Manaus Moderna Fair and their contribution to Amazonas, regarding the identity,
memory and interdependent networks existing in the place, considering the gastronomy,
the variety of foodstuffs and the relationships. of power, regarding the identity, memory
and tradition of the place in relation to society.
