Parque industrial: uma proposta de leitura do romance proletário de Patrícia Galvão

Abstract

Drawing on cultural studies, this dissertation aims to develop an analysis of how the element of space is utilized in Parque Industrial (1933) by Patrícia Galvão to construct the narrative and its influence on the subjectivities of the characters, particularly the female ones. The work under analysis focuses on the textile workers of São Paulo at the beginning of the 20th century, who traverse the streets challenging the social roles imposed on them, while attempting to survive the exploitation and violence inherent in the industrialization process. Space, thus, is presented as a product of the social practices conceived in this specific time and place. Considering the political and aesthetic choices embedded in the composition of the novel, it also seemed crucial to reflect on the space occupied by the writer within Modernism and Brazilian literature. These two aspects of her life—communism and modernism—directly influence the way space is portrayed in the work discussed herein. To develop the analysis of the chapters, the following primary references were utilized: Luís Bueno (2006), Jorge Amado (1933), Osman Lins (1976), Silviano Santiago (2000), João Luiz Lafetá (2000), Constância Lima Duarte (2016), Rita Terezinha Schmidt (2000), Henri Lefebvre (2006), Achille Mbembe (2016), Stuart Hall (2016), Maurice Halbwachs (1990) and Pierre Bourdieu (2012). The research demonstrates that the spatiality in the work, as it is constructed, is not merely a backdrop for the plot’s development; it produces narrative effects that highlight class tensions and has a significant influence on the characters' urban experiences, directly impacting how they construct their identities.
